Mobile Hating...I Mean Gaming

$
0
0

I don't understand why soooooooo many people hate one mobile gaming.

Gamers are referred to as people who play games (virtual or board). Mobile gamers are just that. They usually play daily and enjoy what they're playing (if not they just delete it, no big deal.) I recently asked my friends if they consider mobile gamers as gamers, they just laughed at me and said they're not "real gamers". I was like "what is a real gamer?" where they're answer was just more laughs. I mean that's fine that's their opinion and probably share it with many other people, but I beg to differ.

I recently read the IGN article (2/3 of Mobile FTP Gamers Quit Within 24hrs) about mobile gaming, when I scrolled down to the comments, again are full of hate and disrespect (but then again, most of the main articles are full of trolls). The disrespect mobil gaming faces most likely stems for the stereotypes of what a "casual" and "hardcore" gamer is. However, "cause" and "hardcore" are just labels are are socially contrasted. They only matter because people make it matter. In reality, there is no such thing as either, just a gamer. The definition of 'gamer' is a person who plays a game or games. There are other factors that people have before associating themselves with the noun. For instance, I like to draw but I don't consider myself as an artist. I consider myself as a gamer because it is my hobby of choice, I play games daily and I enjoy them. [Obviously if your job/occupation is a gamer/artist/photographer/etc. you'd probably associate with it.] That's my personal preference, anything people associate themselves with is based on personal perception.

So why knock on mobile gamers? If they consider themselves gamers why spread hate? If they play their tablet or phone games daily and enjoy doing so, what makes them so different from console or PC gamers? I mean IGN even has it's own 'Mobile' tab and GameInformer includes reviews for iOS/Andriod (whatever mobile platform). Even the blog has a category for Mobile Gaming.

I guess the main arguments stem that phone/tablet games are just to pass time, like if you're waiting for something else. It isn't because you are invested in the game, it is because they are time fillers. While that may be true for some people, that isn't everyone. I love playing games on my tablet and phone. Just as much as I like playing my portable device or console. While yes a lot of times I play them to fill time or while I'm waiting, other times I don't. I'll just be in my room playing a game.

Time Sensitive Games

Most phone games, or at least free-to-play ones don't really have amazing stories. They're time sensitive stories/quests. A lot of people don't consider those games because all you do is set your characters on a quest and return later. I have quite a few games like that such as "High School Story" (Pixelberry Studios) and "Farm Story 2" (Storm8) ... I like these games because when I have to go to class I can set them to do things and when I come back they'll be done and I can play them. I also have games such as "Spirit Stones" (Gamevil) and "Stardom" (Glu) which are time regenerative. These can sometimes be annoying because I just want to play the game without having to wait an amount of time to play it again, but it doesn't bother me that much because I have other things to do.

Stardom: The A-List/Hollywood

Pay-to-Win

Again with free-to-pay games, the developers heavily rely on micro transactions. Thus, many people believe the only way to get ahead is to pay. This isn't true for many games (or at least the ones I have played). I have a lot of patience, so I don't need to instantly have super rare cards or gems to buy special items. Obviously, if you pay you get the better stuff, that's a given. However, it isn't necessary to win. Maybe when it comes down to PvP, but if you're just playing the story you're good. A lot of people also seem agitated for these little transactions because they eventually stack, although that is just more ignorance if they can't monitor their spending.

Social Gaming

Almost everything now in days has little icons to link to Facebook or Twitter. Even console games now are promoting social sharing, maybe not with Facebook and Twitter, but with Twitch and simple friend sharing. However, a lot of these games will give incentives for inviting friends or simply just having friends who play the same game. I rarely use social networking sites, like I don't have a Twitter or Tumblr, so these games get no free advertising from me! However, for a lot of people social networking through games is all the rage. Companies like Zynga make bank off of social games.

Zynga Poker

AAA Mobile Games

I don't actually know what these are called, but they're usually paid for. There are some great mobile games, I mean just look at IGN's 2013 Best Mobile Game winner and nominees. All those are paid games, but actually lengthy meaty games. Take a look at the winner Device 6 (a game I never played); Simogo took a unique risk on puzzle and created a unique challenging game. A lot of the commenters wondered if that game would platform elsewhere. So to conclude to those who say mobile games aren't "real" games, there are many that disprove that. Not only that, but large publishers like Ubisoft and EA also develop phone games.

◊◊◊

So to conclude, there's really no reason to hate on mobile gamers. Mobile games share many characteristics of regular retail games (but of course have many differences). However, they are still games. They are categorized as games and are played for entertainment. The sole reason is to have fun. Like any game, if you don't like it don't play it, but there's no reason to disrespect them. Developers put time into these games.

In the end that's all just my opinion, you all don't have to agree with it :p

UPDATE: Reading NerdExp's comment reminded me that a lot of mobile phone gamers, don't even consider themselves gamers. Which is funny because they'll poor hours and dollars into games, but say they do not game. This is probably also why they are neglected to be recognized as gamers, because they do not group themselves as being one. Mostly because it has to do with an image problem or just plain denial, especially those people who play daily. To me it's just kind of funny.

So tell me,

Do you consider "mobile gamers" as "gamers"?

Do you like/dislike mobile games?

Thanks for reading!
On a side note, Trials Frontier was released today and I'ma be playing the shiz out of it

Pokémon Art Contest Entry

$

0

I was reading my newsfeed and saw that people have commented on this: The Second Annual(?) Pokemon Art Contest!!! hosted by gameguy523. I was not active on MyIGN for the first contest. But I looked at the entries and so many talented people, nice to see lots of the community participating. I personally don't even care about winning (I think anyone who takes the time to use their creative mind and translate that to a drawing is a winner), I just wanted to participate for fun. The rules for this year is not limited to just starter Pokémon anymore; I'm not sure if 3 fakémon are required or up to 3 (with evolutions)...Regardless, I'm only skilled enough to make 1 XD

So with no further comments, here is my Fakémon!!!:

Smibre Fakémon

Okay, so by the way, I know I completely spelt ferocious wrong, but I couldn't fix it because I colored my drawing on a photo editing site called PicMonkey for I lack any art design programs. I originally drew this with a No. 2 pencil, then scanned it onto my laptop. I colored the body in PicMonkey, I think I stayed in the line's pretty well for just using the touch pad XD Any who, the idea came to me last night. After I read the rules of the contest, I started thinking of Pokémon. Since, Pokémon can literally be anything and usually have a real world counterpart, there was a huge pool of options.

I've always been a fan of Ground type Pokémon (actually it's number 3 on my top types list). I'm not really artistically talented, so my idea looked way, like wayyyyy, cooler in my head! Instead, it came out as this cute little feline cat pouncing XD

Okay so now onto my Pokémon:

Name: Smibre

Type: Ground

Classification: Carcass Pokémon

Ability: Sand Veil

Hidden Ability: Battle Armor

Height: 4ft 2in

Weight: 255lbs

Pokédex Entry: Fast and ferocious, this desert feline uses its exposed bones to blend into the sand as a carcass, then pounces as its prey moves by.

Location: Desert Resort, Unova (also found in other desert regions of the Pokémon world)

Base Stats: Total: 500 HP: 80 ATK: 100 DEF: 90 SP. ATK: 42 SP. DEF: 88 SPD: 100

Here is its realistic counterpart;

Smibre used Roar

This is what I was thinking more or less trying to accomplish XD

Yup that's all folks!
Thanks for reading!

"Gamer Takes Losing to a New Level"

$
0
0

So I'm gracefully watching my CW TV shows, which for me also shares that channel with Pix 11 News (my local news channel). The commercial pops up for "tonight at 10pm, we have a hitting story about how 'Call of Duty' loss prompts shooting hoax in Long Beach."

HERE WE GO!

So long story short (or at least what the news tells the public);

A 17 year old male lost a game of Call of Duty so he called 911, impersonated the winner and said he murdered his entire family.

Now, if a kid is being a sore loser over a game, there is clearly some larger issue going on. Most people have common sense to know that it is not acceptable to be calling hoax 911 calls. Common sense is defined as anything known and understood by the general public.

What I'm confused about is this whole quote right here:

“Unfortunately this is a terrible, national problem for law enforcement. It’s called swatting, when people playing a video game, if they lose, they call the police and mimic the person that they lost to, and say that they killed family members and then they see how many people they can get to come down here,” said Long Beach Police Commissioner Michael Tangney.

Maria’s son won a round of Call of Duty and the sore loser he played, who lives somewhere else, in an unknown location, called in the hoax that led to a massive police response.

There is an actually term for such a thing?! Swatting...I wish we could just swat all these trolls like flies is more like it. The fact that this is a real issue, just shows how corrupt the United States has become.

Something doesn't add up. How does the loser of the game, know where the winner lives and what their name is and all this personal stuff. Maybe the New's people worded it funny, but it really doesn't make sense. Loser calls emergency 911 on winner's house? It doesn't really make sense unless they personally know each other, but even then, the whole story just doesn't add up.

The larger issue is not the video game itself, it is the kid! Society needs to accept it's responsibility and stop using a scapegoat for not making citizens to their standards. I see what society is doing here, trying to shed bad light on violent video games yet again. Instead, they should be focusing on the norms they created these boys (and girls) are following. Like how males are supposed to be masculine and how girls are supposed to be feminine. All these social constructs is what thrives teens to do what they do, not video games.

I am assuming this is a fake because it really just doesn't add up on any scale. Again, how did the loser get the winner's address. How did he know the victim's name. Even if he did know the victim's name, that phone call could have came from anywhere. It literally makes ZERO SENSE!

Here's a few articles if anyone wants to read up on it and/or tell me your opinions about this strange endeavor:

What's the Appeal of 'Virtual Pet' Games?

$
0
0

I'm sure everyone must have had some form of virtual pet in their life at a point in time. I've personally had my fair share, but what is the appeal? Why do people get joy out of caring for an animal that cannot truly love them back? Virtual pets, in the sense, are a game, or at least fall under the genre of 'simulation'. On the market, we see countless number of pet games ranging from the typical house pets to farm animals to mythical beasts. In a way it satisfy's those who cannot obtain such pet they want, but in a fun manner. However, virtual pets basically just like real pets except they can't physically pass away, they can be left for days without a officer showing up fining you for animal abuse, and they just don't replace the real physical being. It can also prove as a challenge of responsibility.

♦◊♦

When I was a kid, my parents refused to buy my sister and I a real pet. So for my very early years of grade school, my parents bought me a Tamagotchi!!!

Tamagotchi Connection

Yes, this now retro virtual pet was my first virtual pet and will forever be the superior virtual pet (at least in my book!) For me, my Tamagotchi was a responsibility, but I enjoyed taking care of it. I would feed it and play with it, my sister had one too, so they could interact. It was great. I could tell the mood my Tamagotchi was in and I could train it as well. It had all the basis of a virtual pet.

Virtual pets usually aim their focus on children, but many adults still like to have a pet to spend time with. I mean the company Ubisoft literally has a whole branch dedicated to virtual Petz, Dogz, Catz, and Horsez. Virtual pets were practically a sensation. It let a person be able to care for animals that they've always wanted to but couldn't. Whether it was money issues, locations issues or allergic issues, virtual pets obliterated all those problems. However virtual pets would never be able to satisfy the physical intimacy levels of friendship that a real pet can give.

Dogz 5

Now as technology advanced, virtual pets moved away from the 8-bit pixels to more advanced game forms. Around the early 2000's the internet really started to become a popular interface. So, around the time I was ending elementary school and moving to middle school I upgraded to internet virtual pets, more specifically Neopets!

Neopets

Neopets

11 years active? I think not, I'd really say 4. Any who, Neopets was great. Not only did I have 1 virtual pet, I had 4! I would faithfully log-on and feed my pets to keep them happy (as you can see, years of absence left them all sad.) However, this wave of virtual pets introduced mini-games. It would keep the player interested and was a good way to make coin. Of course, this was way before micro transactions came to surface (and now those dominate all the "super cool items"). Everything in the game was essentially free, not like in-game money, but real money. Thus, caring for the virtual pet was just that 'virtual'. I was not paying to take care of such creatures, which was great. I think that sense appeals to a lot of people who like virtual pets because it is cheap. It may be a one time fee purchasing the game and that's it. Where as owning a physical pet whether a dog, cat, guinea pig, horse, snake, etc. is costly! A pet is the only family member a person can freely choose.

However, some people are unfortunate and haver allergies to pets. Whether it is to their fur or dandruff, the pet can't be around. Virtual pets solved that issue and appealed to consumers that couldn't. Now with technology, pets have become more and more life like. Movements, textures, behaviors are all life like compared to prior renditions of the category. However, the concept it still the same. We are still taking caring of said pet.

Nintendogs + Cats

Virtual pets lets us take being a pet owner to a new level. House pets are one thing, but how many people actually showcase their pet? I feel like there's only a pool of people who do so and that is because it is their profession. Games like Nintendogs by Nintendo, allowed you to train your dog for either agility, frisbee or obedience competitions. The game was pretty accurate with the care for pets; if you neglected them for long enough they may run away, if you didn't feed them they wouldn't do anything, and with time their skills decreased. On the plus side, probably the best thing about virtual pets, is that they will always (at least in most games) be there when you return.

Virtual pets have also been integrated with some actual RPG. Probably the most notable integrated game would be Harvest Moon because you're income relies heavily on livestock. Games like this integrated the idea of having a virtual pet as a key element to success in a game. Again, though, if you did not essentially care for the pet in-game daily it would be unproductive and eventually taken away. Games are pretty good with advocating animal rights, at least the ones that require you to care for them.

Harvest Moon: Animal Parade

Virtual pets though tend to lost their interest value overtime. You can only do the same thing with the animal for so long. It is different with a real animal because it is physically there. It will respond differently to everything it encounters. Virtual pets are programmed to behave a specific way, thus taking out any real personal experiences. While they are fun to care for, especially those pets that one cannot obtain in real life, they eventually turn into sadness because of that fact.

♦◊♦

Raise your hand if you've ever had a virtual pet!

... or just tell me :p

• Have you've had any virtual pets?

• How long do you usually care for them?

• Do you have any current virtual pets?

The Struggle I Had with Xbox One Sharing

$
0
0

So I finally got my Xbox One Drive and Upload Studios to sync with each other. I literally could not get my uploads to share with my One Drive until today. I don't know why, it just wouldn't work. So then I deleted both applications, hard resett my Xbox One, re-installed both apps and WALAH! THEY WORKED!

Before OneDrive became OneDrive it was Sky Drive. I never used it. I had no need. Then, the next-gen console came out and included game DVR. I recored so many clips ranging from Call of Duty to Trials Fusion to Assassin's Creed IV. Saving clips is a great idea, as advertised, you get to save those epic moments. You know those ones that it is better to see than explain. However, I couldn't get my OneDrive and Upload Studio to sync. Even when I created a clip in the studio, it wouldn't let me upload it to OneDrive. ... I had this great idea to ask the IGN Xbox boards, ha! #FirstWorldProblems

Eventually after more deleting and re-installing it worked! I'm not going to question it!!

So I'm happy that now I can share clips, so I made 2 Titanfall montages. I haven't played Titanfall in weeks because I've been playing my Xbox 360. I was playing a lot of Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, Left4Dead, now Bound by Flame; so I neglected my Xbox One for games. But then I played Titanfall with my friend yesterday and it reminded me how awesome the game is.

In spirit of Titanfall and my over excitement for getting the sharing to work, here are a couple of clips:

I'll throw in a ¼ Battlefield 4 and ¾ Call of Duty: Ghosts montage :p

I wish I took the time to make a Trials Fusion montage, I have so many "that's just wrong" auto-save clips XD It's not my fault that my own bike falls and crushes me.

If only the DVR's could also record my reaction at those points in the game, that'd be awesome.

So tell me,

Do you think the incorporation of game DVR sharing is a good feature?

Community Theme: Happy Mothers' Day

$
0
0

In light of Mother's Day, and in response to Lost_in_Translation's new weekly community blog challenges, I picked my favorite video game, movie  and TV mom. If you couldn't tell, the theme was Mother's Day.

The challenge:

"What I'd like people to write about this week, in honor of Mother's Day, is about their favorite videogame, TV, book, or movie mom.  Describe who your mom is, where they came from, and why you picked them.  Anyone is fair game, so long as they are an actual mother."

I'm sorry, I bent the rules a bit D: I couldn't just choose one medium, so I picked one from each (except book...I'm not much of a reader!) There are just too many moms that need to be appreciated, fictional or not! With no further ado, here are my top moms!

♦◊♦

♥ Movie ♥

There are just so many movies to choose from, but I think I'm joing to go with a Disney flick, but not just one where the mom sacrifices her self for her baby like in Bambi and Finding Nemo (both made me cry, they were both quite sad and dramatic, also heartbreaking), but instead I'll go with one where she played an incredible role.

Like literally incredible, because my movie mom award goes to Elastigirl, aka Helen Parr, aka...

"Mrs. Incredible"

Who: Helen Parr

Originally the super heroine Elastigirl has the super power of extreme flexibility and body shape manipulation. She is capable of  stretching any part of her body up to 100’ (34 m) and can become 1 mm thin. She can also reshape her body in a variety of ways, such as a boat or parachute. During her adventures as Elastigirl, she came across her now husband Mr. Incredible. All super powers aside she tries to live a normal life with her husband and three children, Violet, Dash and Jack-Jack. After she settling down, she participated heavily focused on her children's lives trying to keep them as "normal" as possible and away from the public knowing of their powers. Her only daughter Violet has the power of invisibility and the force fields, older son Dash has super speed and the youngest of the bunch Jack-Jack who has the most versatile powers.

Where: The Incredibles (Disney & Pixar, 2004)

Why: Mother of the Year Award

She puts family first,

Kids typically don't listen. As a mother she obviously didn't want her children involved in such dangerous actives, especially at such young ages. She also didn't want to alert them of any family troubles, what kid wants to know their father is in danger? However, when children don't listen she still accommodates to them in motherly ways. Family is her priority. While maybe it wasn't the smartest idea to leave the two in a cave while she goes solo to rescue her hubby, it was the safest. How was she supposed to know the cave lead to a rocket outlet! Luckily, she raised her children right and they worked together to stay alive. All that parenting she invested in paid off. Her children respected her and loved her, as did she to them.

♦◊♦

♥ Television ♥

There's so many TV-moms to choose from, but I'ma have to go with one from my favorite series. I mean, she is probably the most accepting mother I've seen (given the circumstances). I mean if I found out my daughter died and then reanimated as a bloodthirsty vampire, I'd be on edge at first too.

So, my TV-mom award goes to the town Sheriff

"Liz Forbes"

Who: Sheriff Elizabeth "Liz" Forbes.

Liz is the loving mother of newly turned vampire daughter Caroline Forbes (poor girl, at 17, she was suffocated in a hospital after recovering from a almost fatal car accident.) Even though this turn of events happened to her one and only daughter, Liz was able to overcome the fact that her daughter was a bloodsucker. Being a council member in the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia (meaning they hate and hunt vampires), she had quite a large acceptance meter to jump over. First time around she had her memory wiped, because she couldn't handle knowing her daughter had died and reanimated. However, she eventually found it and like any caring mother, sent out spies to find out if her daughter was really a vampire. Like many mother-daughter teen relationships, there's wasn't the best, but it greatly improved over the seasons. Liz has become aware of her supernatural surroundings and sometimes chimes in to help out.

Where: The Vampire Diaries (The CW, 2009-present)

Why: Accepting and Understanding Mother Award

I would like to think the most kids want to be loved and accepted by their parents, especially their mothers, since they are the ones who carried them around for 9 months. Now I think Sheriff Forbes here had a difficult hurdle to overcome. Being a council member means that they were raised to believe all vampires are evil monsters. Thus, knowing that her daughter was on of this abominations stirred her emotional judgements. She was taught and raised to kill vampires...

Whoops, seems like she missed that one! Her daughter attempted to save the day, once again revealing to her mother her true self. Liz accepted her daughter second time around because she couldn't bear to lose her baby and she knew her daughter wasn't a monster. She was able to accept and continue to love her daughter the same as before. Now, they are closer than ever.

Sheriff Forbes also has a strong personality. While the town crawls with supernaturals, she still stands tall as a human. Like most humans, they try to stay out of arguments with the supernaturals and instead make alliances. She does her Sheriff job as best she could, I mean, what can you do with a town run amuck with vampires, werewolves and witches! Liz remains a key figure in the limited iconic human faction of Mystic Falls...actually I think she's the last survivor. Poor Ms. Forbes she must be so lonely when I think about it, all her human friends have pretty much perished and her daughters off to university. Still, she remains strong and supportive and that's admirable.

♦◊♦

♥ Video Game ♥

Now this video game mom has been here supporting the main protagonist since 1996. She wishes me the best and never forgets to pack me Running Shoes!

Nonetheless, my most admirable video game moms are no other than:

"Pokémon Moms"

Who:

Well let's see, every generation is a new mom, simply I'll break it down by generation:

Generation I is Delia Ketchum (at least for Ash) otherwise she's unnamed in the game from Pallet Town, Kanto.

Generation II is an unnamed mother from New Bark Town, Johto.

Generation III is Caroline from Littleroot Town, Hoenn.

Generation IV is Johanna from Twinleaf Town, Sinnoh.

Generation V is an unnamed mother from Nuvema, Unova.

Generation VI is Grace from Vaniville, Kalos.

Where: Pokémon series (Nintendo & Game Freak, 1996-present)

Why: Trustworthy Award

At 10 years old they trust me enough to go out and explore the world all on my own. She has appeared in every generation (obviously different name and appearance), but practically has the same role and that is to be a mother! In the later generations she would call me to check up one me or I could call her. She was always there and would always welcome me back home. She also encouraged me to do the best I could and to be smart with my Pokémon! So supportive. :)

I waited to post this 'cause now it's Mother's Day! Time to appreciate the woman who gave us life.

Apparently I am not the only one who thinks Mrs. Incredible is a great mom :p

Lately I have been suffering from writer's block, so I'm glad Lost_In_Translation has these weekly themes. Not only that, but they help strength our little MyIGN community. Any who, this week's theme is Giant Monsters!!!!!! ROOOARRRRRR! Who doesn't love monsters. Being able to appreciate artists designs of creature of fantasy is a great idea.

The Challenge:

"What I'd like people to write about this week, is about their favorite giant monster. It can be from movies, tv, videogames, or any other form of media. It can be friendly or frightening. The only key point is that it has to be large and in charge! Any monster is fair game!"

This week I chose my favorite video game giant, surprisingly no it is not a Pokémon although I could've easily written about one or even three XD Anyway, this giant is always in a constant rage and only has one purpose, to destroy and kill survivors.

♠ ♦ ♠

LEFT4DEAD ♦

♠ ♦ ♠

χ TANK χ

What: Tank [Zombie]

Special infected and the most powerful type of special zombie in the games (with the exception of the Witch, who can instantly bitch-slap you to death...) Unless all teammates cooperate, the Tank can easily wipe out a team. The Tank is a male special infected who obviously has some bulky physical mutations. Speculation is the was on steroids prior to catching The Green Virus. However, even though the Tank is extremely bulky it is also agile and can keep up with healthy survivors.

The Tank has inhuman strength. He has the ability to chuck slabs of concrete from afar, but also be able to knock over mid-sized cars (he can also punch tree logs, dumpsters, bumper cars, etc.). He can also easily smash through walls if necessary.

Prior to Left4Dead2, the Tank would focus on one sole survivor, but now it focuses on whichever is nearest. He is in a constant rage when alerted, which can also be his downfall. It is speculated that the energy required to be a Tank is too much for the body. When the Tank cannot find a way to hit or kill his prey, he becomes engulfed in rage and dies from physical exhaustion.

Game(s): Left4Dead & Left4Dead2 (Turtle Rock Studios & Valve, 2008 & 2009)

Why: Simply a giant meaty tank. Compared to other video games creatures, the Tank is definitely not the tallest. Compared to his other zombie friends though he is a giant. The survivors of Left4Dead even nickname the Tank "Big Ass Zombie" and "Giant thing" etc. When playing Left4Dead (either one) being up close and personal with a tank can be quite traumatizing if it isn't intentional. One punch will send you flying, hence beware of ledges. The best strategy to kill of this huge infected is to fight fire with fire. Literally, throw a nice little molotov and burn him to death. As long as water isn't nearby to put the flames out, fire will do extreme damage along with teamwork.

... writing about this makes me want to play TAAAANNKKKKKK!!!! .... a game mode where all the special infected are Tanks :p

Here's a random YouTube video showing off Tank mode. Really as survivors all you do is run and as Tanks well hope to catch them or kill them before they get too far XD

So yup, that's my giant monster of the week.

Community Theme: Mutant Powers

$

Superpowers. I think at least once in everyone's life they wish for a power of some sort. Of course, there are more useful ones than others, but nonetheless being able to do something out of the ordinary and rather extraordinary would be amazing.

This week's community challenge by Lost_in_Translation is MUTANT POWERS!

The Challenge:

"What I'd like people to write about this week, is what you think would be the most useful super power to have, and (more importantly) why.  It could be one from an existing mutant in the X-Men universe, or it could be a mutant from another form of media.  It could be from comics, movies, TV, videogames...really, any medium is available to you. All I ask is that you explain why that power would be useful, and perhaps how you'd use it if you had the ability."

For me, the most useful super power would be the power to heal, either oneself or others. Being a plagued planet, having the ability to heal either from injury or disease would be very useful. It might cause an end to modern medicine since, but it would be able to cure those currently incurable diseases. On top of that, this ability leads to no chance of there ever being a zombie apocalypse!!

♥ Rapid Cellular Regeneration ♥

Rapid cell regeneration also known as "spontaneous regeneration", "tissue regeneration", "epithelial cell regeneration", or simply "regeneration" or "healing". It is the ability to regenerate cells at an increased rate, resulting in physical injuries healing in a matter of seconds or minutes. The most advanced form of this power is called Totipotency, which is the ability to regenerate one’s entire body back from just one part of one’s body (even as small as a cell).

There are different levels of regeneration. Depending on the potency of this ability they may be able to heal from any wound and be rendered immune to any ailment that affects both the mind and body. There are people who can naturally have the ability (ie. gene mutation) or those who have acquired it (ie. injection, radiotion). Each ability has different properties and limitations, but nonetheless have the same basic healing factors.

Some different variations of the ability:

Claire Bennett (Heroes)

Save the cheerleader, save the world!

Ability: Claire Bennett has the natural ability to heal. She had this ability since birth, but it has not stunted her growth, so she continues to age. She has the ability to heal physical wounds and sicknesses. She can also regenerate lost body parts, for instance she cuts off her little toe to see if it would grow back (it did).

Limitations: She feels everything that happens when injured, it is not like she can't feel the pain. She also has to realign her body parts for them to heal properly, although she can function with them misplaced. Also, if a foreign object is lodged in her brain her ability to heal is stunted because the brain isn't sending signals to her body, however once the object is removed the ability will activate again.

Useful Factor: The blood of a person with rapid cellular regeneration can be injected into another and it would heal their wounds/sickness.

◊ ♦ ◊

All vampires/hybrids (The Vampire Diaries/The Originals)

Just a scratch.

Ability: This ability is acquired through death and transition into a vampire/hybrid. Since vampires/hybrids are an undead species, they also acquired a variety of other abilities; healing factor is just one. Vampires/hybrids can never be sick, they will also heal cuts, wounds and burns (and any other physical debilitation.) They also feel pain, but the older they are the more tolerant they become.

Limitations: Being a creature derived from magic, vampires/hybrids have several limitations that the healing factor cannot compensate for. If a vampire drinks vervain their system is weakened, if a hybrid drinks vervain or wolfsbane their system is weakened; thus the healing factor doesn't work as quickly. A werewolf/hybrid bite to a vampire is fatal, it completely stunts their regenerative power and will kill them with 24hrs due to poison. Vampires can burn to death in the sun if they do not retreat fast enough, they can also be killed by a wooden stake through the heart or simply having the heart ripped out (other organs such as spleens, livers, eyes, etc. will all grow back).

Summer sunshine, I miss you!!

Useful Factor: Vampire/Hybrid blood when given to humans will heal them of their injuries. However, if the human dies (usually an external cause like murder), then they will become a vampire.

◊ ♦ ◊

Slade Wilson and Roy Harper (Arrow)

[Season 2 - Spoiler Alert]

Ability: This ability can only be acquired through the serum, Mirakuru. the Mirakuru was a serum that caused increased strength and rapid cell regeneration created by the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II, in hopes of creating an army of super soldiers. From viewing, Slade Wilson was the first person to be injected with the Mirakuru and survives. He awoke with all his burn marks healed and physical wounds shut. It granted him the healing factor ability along with inhuman strength and enhanced senses. Roy Harper proved another successful subject and was granted the same ability. Normally, a sedative is supposed to be used, but in the cases of Slade and Roy non wereused.

Limitations: The serum originally didn't have a high success rate; the subjects injected would bleed from their eyes and die. If successful, while the body was physically keen, the mental backlash the Mirakuru was treacherous. The serum has serious side effects. Slade "Deathstroke" and Roy "Red Arrow" both had trouble controlling their rage, anger and sensibility. While a gift, the Mirakuru is also a curse for it creates an almost uncontrollable rage, anger and hatred towards others. The strain can completely wipe someone's sense of control. This loss of control is usually triggered by an event. Also, the healing factor of the serum did not allow for regeneration of body parts. Slade stated that everything else healed, except for his eye (which never grew back).

Useful Factor: Training to control the anger helps, however it is very difficult and strenuous. While Roy was still in control he helped the Arrow fight his enemies, due to his strength and ability to heal this was quite useful. Slade was the same way before he found out the Arrow had a part in his lover's death. Besides the mental loss of control, a person would never be ill if injected with the serum.

◊ ♦ ◊

With this ability we would be able to end long term illnesses. We'd also be able to save those people who would have normally died from severe injuries, especially those who were victims of a terrible incident. While I feel this ability would be abused by many, it would have a lot more benefits than negatives.

If I personally had this ability, I'm not sure I would tell the world because then I would just be a lab rat. I would heal those that I deemed worthy of being healed. Obviously like my friends and family, but I wouldn't mind helping those who fell victim to a disease. I'd just donate blood to the American Red Cross every once in a while.

Rating my own 3DS Collection

I was inspired by CookieCrumbles' blog (she reviewed her own 3/DS collection) to review my own collection! Luckily, my 3DS selection is the smallest of my gaming collections with 9 total. If I were to review any of my other collections it would take forever. Then again, I'm not actually reviewing them. I like all my games. Hence, it'll be a scoreless reviews because reviews are just numbers. It's about the experience. I really don't care about mechanics that much (unless they are really really broken.) Hence it's more of just a rating scale from Good to Great to Awesome to Amazing to Best Game in the Collection!!

So with no further ado, I will start my rambling. Maybe those of you who are contemplating about what games to get for your 3DS will these experiences helpful is deciding what games to buy :p

Game Collection - DS 3DS

I'll go in order from my least favorite to the best game everrrrrrrrr! :p

 Game: Code of Princess

Developer: Bones Inc. & Agatsuma Entertainment

 Publisher: Atlus (North America)

 Year: 2012

 Rating: Good

.

.

Experience: I haven't got that far into the game. However, this game is pure fun button mashing, all you do is hack and slash. The character designs are quite interesting to me. The main protagonist of the game, Princess Solange Blanchefleur de Lux, is way over sexualized. While the few pieces of clothing she wears have great design, her body features are way over the top in the game. My favorite character design is Lady Zozo, a necromancer, and even though she wears scandalous clothes too, she is quite funny. The story itself is quite intense, and the anime like cutscenes are fun to watch. I don't knock it too hard about the revealing female bodies because many anime like Japanese games do. I know their culture is highly different than most countries.

Game: Style Savvy Trendsetters

Developer: Syn Sophia, Inc.

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 2012

Rating: Good

.

.

Experience: I like clothes, hence I bought a game all about clothes. The gameplay is relatively the same, but the cliental will request different clothing depending on the season. My little boutique "Méli Mélo" doesn't have one specific focus, although you could choose to do so. Hence, I sell and design outfits I like and to the clients wishes. The game handles money very well, with client budgets, personal spending, business income etc. It also the feature the ability to compete in Fashion Shows (which if you stick to the theme, will will almost 100% of the time.) For the first completion you get cute rewards, but then after that they get repetitive. The game has local features (which I've never used because none of my friends have this game), but the game also uses the StreetPass function which allows for the swap of Profile Cards. These cards basically tell other people your style philosophy, but also grants them access to visit your boutique. All in all this game is fun for people who like clothes.

Game: Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity

 Developer: Chunsoft

Publisher: Nintendo & The Pokémon Company

 Year: 2013 (North America)

 Rating: Great

.

.

Experience: Playing the previous installments on the DS (Blue Rescue Team being my favorite), I was extremely hyped for this game, but then super let down. While graphically the developers took a step forward, they took 100 steps back with mechanics. The two biggest changes for the worst were that they gave less options of beginner Pokémon and they took away the ability to do multiple tasks at once. Besides those bumps, the gameplay works similar to its previous titles. I enjoy being able to be a Pokémon. I find this spin-off series to be a great idea, I mean, don't we all want to live life as a Pokémon?! (Maybe not all, but I sure wouldn't mind!) The game has it's challenges, but I enjoy turn based games, and Mystery Dungeon does that well. The levels are well designed and the Pokémon in their 3D form look great. Overall, this game is very enjoyable and a nice part of my collection.

Game: Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning

Developer: Marvelous AQL

Publisher: Natsume (North America)

Year: 2012

Rating: Great

.

.

Experience: I have been a fan of Harvest moon ever since I rented Harvest Moon: Another Wonderful Life from Blockbuster for my Nintendo Gamecube. I'm not sure why, but this is by far my favorite farm game. I enjoy raising farm animals and going crops. A New Beginning doesn't stray to far from the basic Harvest Moon formula, but the 3D on handheld makes it an experience not to miss for any Harvest Moon fan. I personally have not got that far in the game, but I really like the calendar system in the game. The best new edition though is the ability to customize your own farmer! This game is very innovative and allows for a lot of customization, from your character to your farm to the town!

 Game: Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate

 Developer: Capcom

 Publisher: Capcom

 Year: 2013 (North America)

 Rating: Awesome

.

.

Experience: I haven't got that far in this game, however from the little monster's I have fought this game is amazing. The closest game I've played to this would be Dragon's Dogma (on 360, another title published/developed by Capcom). In Monster's Hunter 3 Ultimate the controls can be a bit tricky, especially the camera. However, everything besides that works great. The game itself is challenging and has so much to offer. Every monster fought can help create new armor. What is really appealing is the design of every single monster, each fully detailed and programmed with a differentiated behavior. I've heard the story itself is subpar, but it is still a game that must be played for any RPG or monster lover.

Game: Bravely Default

Developer: Silicon Studio & Square Enix

Publisher: Nintendo (North America)

Year: 2014 (North America)

Rating: Awesome

.

.

Experience: I'm not really a huge Final Fantasy fan, in fact I've only played one game which was Final Fantasy XII and I didn't even finish it. I don't think there is anything wrong with the franchise, maybe that just wasn't the right game to be my first of the series. Any who, Bravely Default is the spiritual successor of Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light (I game I've never played, so I have no idea how they connect.) I highly enjoy this game, I really like the turn based mechanics and job system. I haven't completed the game and the part I'm at proves quite challenging (but then again I put it on Hard). The characters are all individually strong, although the American voice over are laughable. Sometimes there is too much talking that I just have to skip through because there is just so much! The story at it's core is quite compelling. What I enjoy the most is the artist styling of the game. The cities within the game have such intricate and unique designs it is hard not to be in awe. I rarely use 3D mode on my 3DS, but on this game it works extremely well (I still keep it on the lowest 3D mode, but the slight difference is represented great!) This game heavily focuses on strategy and combination, however the incorporation of StreetPass and WiFi connection, make the game truly great. A person can send and receive an ability from another. When friends send a power and then you update you're game, you will be able to use it. Also, one can connect to WiFi daily to receive 4 random powers from any one in the world. This game is a must play for RPG fanatics.

 Game: Pokémon X

 Developer: Game Freak

Publisher: Nintendo & The Pokémon Company

 Year: 2013

 Rating: Amazing

.

.

Experience: I bet you all thought this would be my number 1 game :p It is no hidden secret that I love Pokémon! After 14 years, finally seeing the core Pokémon series go 3D literally blew my mind. While gameplay had the same old formula, you know travel the region, battle the gyms, save the world, defeat the Elite Four; the game added so much more. Graphical, the designs of the towns and landscapes were breathtaking. Even though less than 100 new Pokémon were introduced, I think that was completely okay. The new Fairy type introduced now helped level the competitive field against the all mighty Dragons. I actually don't play Pokémon competitively, I literally just like to raise the Pokémon I want to. It is fun to do casual battles, and the new system Game Freak integrated works extremely well. The way the the bottom screen splits friends, acquaintances and random people works well; I enjoy sending O-Powers to people...although not many send them to me! Also, the new feature Pokémon Amie is by far the cutest and one of my favorite new treats. I finally get to pet and play with my Pokémon, it's like a dream come true. Adding onto this dream, I finally can customize my character! Not only that, but you can have your own personal little player clip. While many argued that there wasn't a high replay value and it was not as engaging as previous installments, I don't find that true. Then again, I always find replay value in Pokémon games and it is my go to game. I can not play it for weeks, but when I return to it there goes a bunch more hours of my life!

Game: Fire Emblem: Awakening

Developer: Intelligent Systems & Nintendo SPD

Publisher: Nintendo

Year: 2013

Rating: Mind Blowing

.

.

Experience: I've never played a Fire Emblem game before, but I hit the jackpot with this game. My mind was blow. Every character was so carefully developed and well designed. The characters I used often I built bonds with (I kept my game on casual because the hard was too hard and I'd get so upset when a character would die). I felt so connected to the characters, especially the ones I trained and leveled up. Each one had their own story, but each one could also becomes friends with other characters. The dynamic of the character system was extremely well built. The combat system was also extremely well designed. Being a tactical turn-based RPG, that combat system was pure strategy. There are a plethora of character classes to build upon, each with their strengths and weaknesses. Playing on the hardest level, there really is no room for error (however I wasn't so I was able to have my fair share of character deaths!) The graphics were also excellent, while the turn-base part wasn't in full 3D, when the battle began then the image glory showcased. Not only were graphics and mechanics A+ worthy, the story was very intricate and well written as well. All and all, this is a must play 3DS game (unless you don't like strategy games!)

 Game: Animal Crossing: New Leaf

 Developer: Nintendo EAD

 Publisher: Nintendo

 Year: 2013

 Rating: Best 3DS game everrrrrr!

.

.

Experience: Goodbye life, hello simulation. I have been a fan of the series since I played Animal Crossing on my Gamecube. This game let's me channel my inner Eliza Thornberry and talk to my friendly animal villagers. What I love about New Leaf (besides the enhanced graphics) is the new direction and risk it took. Instead of just being a villager like all the other animals, you are the solo human mayor. You have all the power!!! (but not really because Isabelle has to approve of everything...) The game really pushes a person's creative mind, I've visited so many wonderfully themed towns through the Dream Suite feature. I've also read so many QR Codes for clothing and pattern for my own town (because I am not artistically talented). I've StreetPassed with many other users that my Happy Home Showcase is pretty much full! I've had this game for months and I still don't get bored, even if I do the same thing everyday. I tend to my villagers, I go shopping on Main Street, I clean my already tidy town (thank you Beautiful Ordinance) and make $$$. There are things I still haven't unlocked, I've only completed my Seafood and Fossil collection, and I still don't have every badge. There are new types of NPCs as well as new personalities (which impact public work projects available). The game uses the same WiFi feature to connect friends to games, 4 people can play together by inviting them through the gate. None of my friends have this game, but have no fear, I head over to Tortimer Island to make some new friends! It's a fun place to talk and play mini games with other players (however they're usually so young so then I feel weird, haha!) This game implemented so many new features and new designs that it is a top simulator. I will admit that this game is not for everyone, but for those who like time consuming simulators, this is the game for you for it's replay value is very high! Words cannot explain it's awesomeness!

I bet all you reading this are like "seriously, not a single Mario game?!" I seem to have lost my connection with core Mario games. I had Mario Kart 7, but it is just not the same as being on a console, it is a lot of fun though. I will hands down be getting Super Smash Bros. (because that is one of my favorite games and I lack a WiiU!) There is nothing wrong with Mario, is just that his core platformer games don't interest me anymore (but then again, never really did on handheld).

I also don't own any eShop titles, so those are completely obsolete from my list as well.

I'm sure my collection will grow bigger, I know I'm for sure going to buy Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and of course Pokémon Alpha Sapphire; there will probably be other great titles that will be added before the end of 2014. I've also been eyeing the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (since I never played the original.)

Oh well, for now it is just these 9 games :p Thanks for reading my rambles about these games.

For us Americans, let's celebrate Memorial Day;

and to every countryman who serves as well.

Thanks for reading
Have a nice day/night!

Community Theme: The Pokémon World

Dungeons, dragons and Pokémon?! oh my! Everyone loves a good level design, which obviously varies from person to person. A dungeon level design can be interpreted many ways. There are so many variations of maps, open worlds, dungeons, etc. I don't nitpick too much about maps and dungeons for each one is different, as long as I can get from point A to point B (sometimes point C or D), it's fine!

The community theme by Lost_in_Translation this week is about Dungeon Designs.

The challenge:

"What I'd like people to write about this week, is about dungeon/level themes and design. You could write about your favorite themed type of dungeons (I know everyone loves the Water Dungeon in Ocarina of Time, right?!?!), or how dungeon designs aren't diverse enough, or even the type of dungeon themes and designs you'd like to see more of in a video game. I'd like people to include specific examples from games, and explain why these type of dungeons/themes work, don't work."

I feel like I have neglected writing about Pokémon...so now I am going to write about Pokémon. Each cave and forest incorporated into the game (from the beginning of the series) is basically a unique dungeon. Dungeon's don't have to be the stereotypical underground, you need a torch to travel through, level. Although sometimes in Pokémon you do need to use "Flash" in order to see where you're going! Let me divulge into why I love Pokémon level designs!

Region Designs

Each region of Pokémon is based off a location in Japan. The level design of the Pokémon map is quite linear and really is one large dungeon with smaller one's within it. You start out at part A and eventually get to part Z which unlocks the entire region. Story progression makes it so a player can't jump ahead of the game and see the rest of the design without solving the puzzle (ie.caves and forests) or defeating the boss (ie. gym leaders). Each generation creates a new forest and new caves to be solved, along with the enemies hideout to navigate.

Get ready for Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby (and Delta Emerald?!)

So why are Pokémon maps so successful? I probably would say that the designs aren't over complicated making them easy to navigate. Also, like many level designs, creatures who roam around are area locked. Making each location on the map special. Overall, the region itself is not that large, but when zooming into the cities and caves, it becomes much larger. Each region is different from the one before and the one after.

Level Designs

Route 126 leading to Sootopolis City, Hoenn

Some locations were easier to navigate than others. For instance, each game had a starting forest to naviagate through. Certain paths were cut off due to the not being able to use HM01 Cut at such an early stage, thus encouraging the player to return to the same area to reach those points they originally could not. Discreetly, Pokémon caves and forest share the same formula of many dungeons. It has a start and end, but some have alternate routes, secrets paths, items to be collected, rare creatures, etc. The only thing is they don't all have boss battles, the boss battle occurs when one reaches the city after completing the dungeon. The gym leaders are the bosses of that area and their gym is it's own puzzle to solve. Like most dungeons, once the initial boss is cleared they will not reappear. So, when one challenges their rival or defeats a gym leader they cannot be re-challenged (although some games have the exception like HeartGold and SoulSilver who can re-challenge gym leaders at the Fighting Dojo.)

Victory Road

Victory Road (aka as Champion Road) is supposed to be the most challenging caves. It is the final stretch between you and the top notch Elite Four. The road is full of "high" level Pokémon and "ace" trainers. At the end of every victory road your rival will be there waiting to challenge you. In a way, that is the boss battle of the dungeon, for those that are not "Pokémon masters" this challenge would prove difficult. What I enjoy the most about Victory Road is the puzzle solving. Having to navigate and use your Pokémon's HM/TM moves like Strength, Surf, Waterfall, Rock Smash to solve the map is quite fun. I normally would get lost because sometimes you had to use "Flash" which none of my Pokémon would know, walking around in the dark was much more difficult. I didn't know where trainer's were, were ledgers or ladders were, in a way it made it more fun, it was like the child's game "stranger in the dark".

Victory Road, Hoenn.

So, in the end, Hoenn's Victory Road is my favorite dungeon. Yes, even beating out those Zelda and Skyrim dungeons. It is challenging and well designed. I felt this level design compared to the old and new Pokemon game stood out in complexity. I'm excited to see the remake/successor of this cave.

The Pokémon World

The Pokémon World is just one complex level design that somehow all fits together.

There is more than a ton of different regions accumulated over the games. The overall complexity about how all the different regions fit into one another is actually a mystery, people can only speculate how they all fit together. That's something I love about the Pokémon level design is that we have a specified region, but really don't know how it fits in with the rest of the world.

So tell me,

For those that have played any of the core series of Pokémon,

Which generation has your favorite Victory Road?

Thank for reading
TGIF!

Evil. It's everywhere. It can be the technology we're using or the faces next us. Giving evil a face creates an outlet for us human beings to focus our judgements on. Entertainment media, in all forms, almost always include a villain. The villain will disrupt and cause chaos to the protagonist's life. The soul purpose of the villain is to simply be bad. Strangely, most of us consumers love a great villain. Whether it is for their cause or means, a good-bad villain really makes or breaks a story.

This week's devious challenge by Lost_in_Translation is Villains!

The Challenge:

"What I'd like people to write about this week, are their favorite villain or type of villains. They can be from games, TV, movies, books, whatever medium works best for you. You can discuss why you prefer a singular villain, or discuss the types of villains that you like/dislike, and why.  Elaborate on what about them does/does not impress you, or what you're looking for in a villain to truly love to hate them."

So I pulled my favorite villains from a variety of different entertainment media. I also had to throw in an honorable mention because the trio was just too hard not to write about! With no further ado, here are my choices:

Book

Nurse Ratched

Who: Nurse Ratched (in the 1975 film she is portrayed by Louise Fletcher)

Nurse Ratched is the main antagonist of this classic literature novel. She is the head administrator at Salem, Oregon State Hospital, a mental institution. She is the dictator of the ward and controls her patience by striking fear into their bones. She overseas all their therapy, medications, routines, etc. When a patients displeases her she has no trouble teaching them a lesson, she has so much power that even the ward hands turn a blind eye. Nurse Ratched does everything in her power to maintain her power, but like most books, the protagonist wins in the end.

Where: One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey (1962)

Why:

She may be just doing her job, but she is as strict and sour and ruthless and was the main obstacle of the protagonist. She puts a holt to R.P. McMurphy's and all his friends' plans. I actually read the book before having to read it for one of my high school english classes (I really didn't mind having to reading it again). Nurse Ratched was cruel hearted to the acutes in the ward. However, in the analysis I wrote it made a lot of sense why [literature can be interpreted many different ways, this is mine.] The novel was written and takes place in the 1960's America, women did not have a lot of power at that time, so this little ward run by Nurse Ratched was basically her world to control. She was able to dictate the weak and powerless. but the cruel part is that she enjoyed it. All her power was fueled by the selfish agenda of being in control. Her job was to help the patients and eventually release them, however none of them dared to leave or challenge her for they were frozen with fear. She always made her presence and power clear by pushing the patients buttons without therapeutic help in mind. Inside the walls of the ward she was the head villain who needed to literally be stripped of her power.

On the flip side, outside the ward her acts of selfishness can be viewed as selflessness. She is trying to show that woman should have more power than they do, more control of their lives and more say about what happens. Taking a job at a mental ward is a risky job, a task that only brave and courageous souls would be able to handle. She is being strong in an utterly oppressive time for women.

 Movie

Loki

Who: Loki Laufeyson (Portrayed by Tom Hiddleson)

Loki was raised to believe he was a biological son of Odin, however he quickly learned that was a lie. Everything he once knew started to fall apart, which triggered his turn (in a way). Loki is the God of Mischief, so he was always naturally talented at illusion magic. His adoptive mother Frigga taught him her tricks; Loki seemingly really only cared about her. He always knew he was second to Thor, but never really could pin point why until a run in with a Frost Giant in Jotunheim. He was immune to a would-be devastating Frost Giant touch. Thus, the unraveling of his true birth starting to come together and Odin broke the news that Loki was in fact Loki Laufeyson not Odinson. Apparently this was devastating news to Loki, thus he tried to prove his worth, but that backfired. Loki has always been a complex character, he shows vulnerability, but also shows true power. He does what he wants and doesn't really care who he hurts, as long as he benefits from the actions.

Where: Thor (2011), The Avengers (2012) and Thor: The Dark World (2013) - Marvel

Why: I will admit, I am a fan girl of Hiddleson's Loki. Besides that, I think Loki is actually a very decent villain. The comics portray him as much more cunning and evil than the films do for sure. However, I will purely just talk about the movie version of Loki. Two words sum of this God of Mischief and those are "wounded soul". I am a sucker for villains who have wounded souls, conveinently the ones who weren't initially fully evil, but then some turn of events basically just made them snap.

I thoroughly enjoyed Loki in The Dark World because he was past the whole my family betrayed me mind set, well at least he didn't constantly talk about it. Plus, he was a complete scene stealer. He used all his notorious abilities to make the entire movie, so much better than it would have been. Every scene he was is was great, from his wit to snarky comments to alternative motives. Loki was on a roll, he was pretty much an anti-hero in the film, but the ending creatively revealed his motives, what a smart cookie. What I love about Loki's personality is that he will come across as charming, but almost always has an alternative motive behind his smiles. Whenever he involves himself in something it is to benefit him alone. However, he always plays his cards with tact and precision making him a deadly villain. He lives up to his title of the God of Mischief.

Television

Katherine Pierce

Who: Katerina Petrova (Portrayed by Nina Dobrev)

Born Katerina Petrova in 1473 Bulgaria, this young woman had a baby girl ripped from her arms by her father at just 16. He condemned and banished her, this making her flee to England, where she learned to speak English and assimilate into that culture. In 1942 she met a vampire who introduced her to the original Elijah Mikaelson who later led her to Niklaus Mikaelson. Little did she know that she is part of a mystical bloodline of dopplegangers and was a target to Niklaus. She soon figured out her life was in jeopardy, so she fled for her survival. The same vampire who originally found her tried to help her, but instead she betrayed him and turned herself into a vampire. She was on the run from Niklaus ever since. When she came to America she changed her name to Katherine Pierce in order to hide. She posted up in the small town of Mystic Falls, however when things went array, she still felt no need to help her so called friends and did what she does best; survive.

Where: The Vampire Diaries (2009-present) - The CW

Why: Katherine is by far one of the most selfish characters I've seen on TV. She's mean, witty, and classy. Being 539 years old she's had a lot of experience with the world and knows how to manipulate situations to her liking. She's an extremely cold blooded vampire who has no problem with feeding on citizens. Her attitude and attire fit her persona extremely well, the phrase "if looks could kill" fit Katherine very well. She is a selfish character and has rarely shown vulnerability. Even when she became a human again, she did what she had to to survive. The only time Katherine has shown a vulnerability was to Stefan Salvatore (mostly because there was so witchy mojo drawing them together), Elijah Mikaelson (possibly because she was afraid of him and he enjoyed her when she was a human back in 1492) and her long lost daughter Nadia. Nadia Petrova really was the only person who loved her, she spent centuries searching for the mother that gave her away, but Katherine wanted her daughter more than anything. Even in death (again) Katherine went out with a bang, she was always one step ahead of the game and her selfish attitude made her a pleasure to watch. She used her tongue as a gun and never looked back. I wish more characters were as ruthless as this chick, she was never portrayed as a hero, not even an anti-hero, she simply was a villain!

Animation

Azula

Who: Princess Azula of the Fire Nation

Born into royal blood, Azula is the second child of Fire Lord Ozai. Her older brother Zuko and her are complete opposites, where he has an open heart and hers is basically cold as stone. Azula was always a naturally talented fire bender, showing great promise even when she was a child. She also was a bully as a child and her ruthlessness stayed with her to her teens. She is tactful and smart when it comes to war conflicts, regular teenage drama not so much. Unlike most firebenders, her flames are blue to match her cold-hearted personality. Her quest for power was her main focus, she had no issue going to hunt down the Avatar and stopping anyone in her way, including her older brother. Azula also learned the advanced form of fire bending, the ability to bend lightening which is a deadly strike.

Where: Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008) - Nickelodeon

Why:

Simply, this chick is a bad*ss. She is ruthless, unloving (well the ending I had some feels), and crazy strong. She firebends like it is her life and enjoys showing off her power. When her father asked her to do what her brother failed, she didn't feel the need to hesitate. She shared the same dream as her father which was to take over the world. (However, in the end she felt betrayed and alone from both parents.) Azula's ruthlessness and countless epic battles made her a thrill to watch. Every time she came on screen she was planning something with cruel intentions. I could only imagine her as an adult...

Video Game

Handsome Jack

Who: Handsome Jack

We will apparently be learning about Handsome Jack's backstory in Borderlands: The Prequel, which is releasing later this year. We're also apparently suppose to sympathize with him, I'm curious what his true backstory will be.

In Borderlands 2 though, Handsome Jack is the main antagonist and he's a pretty big d-bag.

Where: Borderlands 2 (2012) & Borderlands: The Prequel (2014)

Why:

He took over Hyperion corporation, which provides New-U Station and is a chief weapons manufacturer. He also named himself to be the dictator of Pandora. He uses a geostationary moon base to keep an eye on the Vault Hunters along with sending troops and supplies to Pandora. He also stole all the credit for finding The Vault, sometimes going as far as taking credit for defeating The Destroyer. He also used his own daughter for evil motives in both Borderlands 1 and 2. The guy is pretty terrible and didn't have a kind bone in his body. To our knowledge, his motives were all greed (enter Borderlands: The Prequel!)

Honorable Mention

Team Rocket

Who: Jessie, James and Meowth

Jessie was born to a high ranking Team Rocket member, however when her mother disappeared while on a mission Jesse was then put into foster care. When she became of age; either she could not afford or did not meet the requirements to go to nursing school, so instead she went to a Pokémon Nursing School (intended for Chansey). Regardless she failed to graduate and then went on to attend trainer's academy. She met her current partner James there, although they did not join Team Rocket at the same time. During the Hoenn and Sinnoh arc, Jessie participated in many Pokemon Contest and seemed to enjoy being a Pokemon Coordinator.

James was born to a wealthy family. His Pokemon partner was Growlie (the Growlithe) which he loved dearly as a kid; their bond continued when he came back for an episode. James' family arranged a marriage for him, but he wasn't having any of that so he left his wealth, Growlie and family behind. James later joined Team Rocket.

Meowth was like any other Meowth, he walked on four legs and talked in Pokemon language. When he was young he saw a movie that influence him to go to Hollywood thinking it would be like paradise. However, he constantly found himself getting into trouble for stealing food. He joined a gang lead by a Persian until one day when he became love struck over a female Meowth named Meowzie. In order to impress the human loving Meowth, he tried to make himself more human by learning how to talk and walk like them, however she still rejected him. The first word Meowth learned was rocket, so he went to seek out Team Rocket.

Where: Pokémon (1997-present)

Why: Probably the strangest troupe of villains, but this trio is on a mission to ruin a ten year old's journey and steal his beloved Pikachu. Being a part of Team Rocket, their job is to steal or capture rare/powerful Pokemon. The forest episode they appear in they notice how strong Pikachu is (probably is a perfect IV Pokemon) and have made it their life's mission to capture it. From that point on, every episode they appear in they have pretty much attempted to capture and take Pikachu away from Ash Ketchum. How mean is that, picking on a ten year old boy, quite unethical in my opinion. Now this trio themselves isn't as rotten as other members (ie. Butch and Cassidy, the boss Giovani), I mean if you think about their original motto they would come across as do-gooders not villains. Regardless, this trio is the ongoing antagonist of the series.

I've already read a bunch of weekly themes for this challenge and they're all great!

So tell me (briefly),

Who's your favorite villain and why?

When Toys Come to Life

E3 released a lot of great games this year, but what I took a lot of notice in was Nintendo's presentation, most notably their creation of the collectable figures: Amiibo. This new franchise will obviously be in direct competition with the other toys to TV products, Skylanders and Disney Infinity. My question is, is there room on the market for another interactive toy franchise? Will it sell on the market?

In my opinion, yes it will! Nintendo has a sweet charm to their company, these figurines are more an accessory to their major titles. They are not their own game. Skylanders and Disney Infinity have their own platform and games in which the figurines can connect to. Whereas these new Amiibo are already programmed to react to the WiiU gamepad. They were showcased to be compatible with Super Smash Bros. and was also mentioned to be compatible with Mario Kart 8.

Beside that fact, another question is, what is the appeal to these toys? Skylanders and Disney Infinity are obviously marketed to children. They were created for children to interact with monsters or their favorite movie characters. The Amiibo doesn't exactly have that same focus. While yes a lot of their game's are kid friendly, they cater to all generations of gaming. For instance, Mario is such a classic character to older generations and not just children. Same with Zelda and Samus, their games and characters aren't really targeted towards children. Amiibo's basically bring the Super Smash Bros. in game collectable trophies to life. They are a collectors ideal toy and serve a purpose than just sitting on a shelf looking pretty.

SKYLANDERS

Skylanders (published by Activision) is a video game series where the games are played along with toy figures that interact with it through a "Portal of Power". This fictional based game has eight elemental categories that a Skylander can be: Earth, Air, Fire, Magic, Water, Life, Tech and Undead. The game series is very popular, originally released in 2011 has already crossed the $2 billion sales threshold. What made this game so popular?

Well for one, it was the first of it's kind in it's era. There wasn't another game that had intractable collectable toys that would come to life on the big screen. Children tend to love collecting things, so do adults. Not only that, but the game was pure fun. All different types of dragons and creatures fighting in the world, is fun. It also was a great family game; I remember one of my high school teachers was like "I can't wait to go home and play Skylanders with my son!" Skylanders did a lot of things right and started a trend.

DISNEY INFINITY

Disney Infinity (published by Disney Interactive Studios) officially hit the market in 2013. It was a competitor to the popular Skylander. it also proved just as successful. Unlike Skylanders, Disney Infinity had all well know characters. Disney is extremely kid friendly and what kid doesn't want to collect and play as their favorite Disney hero or heroine?! It also gave the ability for people to use their creative minds and build their own game in an open-world arena. Disney was smart and had a Play-Set mode meaning only characters from that specific set (usually specific movie franchise) can play in that campaign, thus encouraging players to buy the other sets. All and all, Disney Infinity sold well because it was fun and friendly.

AMIIBO

Now let's talk about the newly announced Amiibo (created by Nintendo). These are not aimed at the children market, they are highly aimed at collectors and avid Nintendo players. Amiibo do not have their own unique game, apparently they will be compatible with multiple games. This is a great idea, not really sure how it will be used, but more information will probably surface. I'm sure for titles like Mario Golf or Baseball or Party, these Amiibo will be integrated in. Amiibo basically carry data over and will integrate themselves into the game when scanned on the GamePad. The demonstration of Mario hopping into the Super Smash Bros. battle was very innovative and seemed to work well. Not only that, but since data can travel both ways, your little statue has all the statistics you want it to have. No two figures will be the same (unless you customize it the same as someone else). If these toys don't sell well internationally, I have a feeling they will hit gold in their hometown of Japan. However, there are many Nintendo fans, heck I'd probably buy a Pikachu figure just to have. My friend has a WiiU, I can just use it there and then I'll always have my own personal character. Very innovative Nintendo, I wish these new products the best.

Due to E3 Lost_in_Translation didn't host a weekly blog theme :( I felt like I had to write something. I could've written about E3, but there are already so many blogs out there and I've commented on so many, so I'd just be repeating myself. Regardless, the new Amiibo figurines really did make an impression on me...I wish they made all 719 Pokémon figurines and then they had a Pokémon game where you can summon them all. Yes...that would be epic.

I personally think I am a little to old for Skylanders and Disney Infinity, but if I had kids I'd hop on one of those brands and play with them. Either that or totally immerse them into the world of Mario and buy Amiibos haha!

I also just wanted to let the community know that I will by on hiatus for about a week and a half. VACATION!! :D

Before I leave on my lovely cruise, tell me:

What is your opinion on Nintendo's Amiibo?

Do you think they will succeed?

Will you be buying any of the figurines?

Au Revoir MyIGN, It's Vacation Time!

Just so you guys won't think I fell off the face of the Earth, I am leaving for vacation on the 16th of June and will most likely return around the 25th. If only the cruise I was going on had WiFi, but no they try to milk your money by making it $.99 per minute.

Regardless, I can live without internet! Also, it's about time for a vacation! The first year of school is over and I've been working full time since it let out. I just need a break, what better place to do that than outside your own country! Sure there are cool places in America, but Europe has tons more landscapes and much much more beautiful architectures. I'll be going on a cruise, mostly with adult I'd say, so all the excursions are historic or highlights. I love learning about different cultures and seeing different places.

Horribly, today is Friday the 13th. So horrible that Lost_in_Translation stealthy updated his status to a challenge.

"In honor of Friday the 13th, I challenge MyIGN bloggers to write a blog about a "lucky" moment in their lives, when things just somehow happened to go your way. Good luck! ;) "

Well since IGN is a mainly a gaming site, I'll focus on a lucky moment in gaming. I have quite a lot, but now with my Xbox One I can actually catch these moments and relive them.

So the story goes, 6 days ago I was playing Titanfall, I killed a dude, he came back for revenge and totally should have killed me, apparently luck was on my side and I was able to ninja jump kick him. End of story.

I'd also like to share some nifty YouTube videos. I stray all the time at work, it is quite terrible, but the season is currently slow. It'll pick up by the end of July and August will be rush.

Honest Trailers - The Lion King

Assassin's Creed 4 (Honest Game Trailers)

If Women's Roles In Ads Were Played By Men

Bee and Puppycat on Cartoon Hangover

Hope you enjoyed the videos, if not sorry for killing like 5 minutes of your time :p

I'll be back soon!

Feel free to post links to new blogs either on this blog or my wall.

Will look forward to reading articles when I return from over seas!

Bye-bye!

Community Theme: Saturday Morning Pokémon!

$
0
0

Buongiorno! I have returned from vacation and am ready to participate in the weekly themes again. Shame I missed last weeks, "favorite video games" I mean...I'm pretty sure I would write about Pokémon as I am with this post for this week. To sum up last week's theme in one word: Pokémon. Favorite video game hands down. The entire franchise I grew up with and share a special bond.

On to this week's theme by Lost_in_Translation which is about the treasured cartoon/anime we watched when growing up.

The Challenge:

"What I'd like people to write about this week, are your favorite cartoons/animated series growing up? It could be a favorite Saturday morning cartoon (for those of us who remember them...), or it could be something from Adult Swim.  It just has to be a show you really loved watching growing up. Talk about what you liked about the show, why it always stood a step above everything else in your mind, etc."

Simple for me, I watched Pokémon every Saturday morning on Kids WB. They put the first  few seasons on Netflix and my mom could hear it from downstairs telling me she remember my sister and I watching that everyone weekend. Oh the nostalgia! However, reattaching Pokémon I released just how violent and messes up Pokémon quite is. In the first few episodes Ash got bullied so much lol, everyone was like "you don't know what you're doing", "you're the worst Pokémon trainer", I was like geezus, cut the kid a break! Of course as a child all I saw were creatures battling each other and it was awesome.

For some reason Pokémon always sat well with me, it always was a fascination and I didn't get bored with it. Even now, I stopped watching the anime after season 13, so the last season of Diamond & Pearl. I enjoyed those series a lot, my favorite probably being between Orange Islands saga or the Battle Frontier. Ash used a variety of Pokemon during these seasons, so it was a pleasure to watch him use his old Pokémon that have been leisurely waiting in Oak's lab.

Can't become a Champion, but can become the Frontier Brain!

There are a few specific episodes that I remember extra well, like the one with giant Pokémon; the one where Ash saves Charmander; the one where Tentcruel and Tentacool come and invade a town; the one where he releases Butterfree; the one where he releases Pikachu but Pikachu came back; the one where him and May cut the final ribbon in half; and a bunch of others that would make this list go on and on. For some reasons Pokémon was just a thrill to watch. I never was able to talk about with anyone though besides my family because apparently in elementary school "it wasn't a girly thing to do". I would see other boys playing Pokémon cards, but they would never let me join :( It was quite sad. I wasn't able to talk to my girl friends about Pokémon because they didn't know what it was. Regardless, I did not let that damper my love for Pokemon! I still love the franchise today! I can't really explain why this show was better than other shows, for instance I also enjoyed Yu-gi-oh and Digimon, but no show compared to Pokémon!

S1E17: Island of the Giant Pokémon

I've watched and own most of the older films. I got all excited that on the flight home from Lisbon, Portugal to Toronto, Canada they had Pokemon: The First Movie and Pokémon: 4Ever on their list of movies to watch. Of course Air Canada is weird and you can only watch stuff on your tablet and phone AND you can only watch movies if you had the app. Like hello, why didn't you tell us that before there is no wifi on the plane! So I was disappointed I couldn't watch those movies.

The scene where everyone cried.

That pretty much sums up this theme! I guess in a more analytic note, while I was younger it was a show that emphasized friendship, handwork and courage. As the seasons went on we watched a kid not age, but grow in maturity. On a non analytical note, the show featured some awesome battles :p

Community Project: Memorable Moments

There are so many memorable moments in entertainment. With electronic entertainment it is easier to remember an image of an enticing scene. Whether it made you cry, smile, laugh; it is something you remember. There are so moments that is  Spreading the community love by participating in R1ch404's community project. The overall theme is "top moments" however I don't really like ranking things at being better than others because there are just so many good scenes. Plus, I can't really remember my top ones, they kind of just come to me in bits and pieces, so it's really the most memorable to me at the moment. Also, just for a more themed blog I'll focus on top video games moments.

Community Project #2

"THEME: Some moments can define an entire generation or separate the gold from the garbage... This moments are important and so, they deserve to be treated with care... in the form of a blog! This Project consist on you choosing your favorite moment for each category I present and after that, if you wish, you can introduce your own categories... I tried to make the categories as different as I could, ensuring that they would be a variety for the moments chosen... Anyway, the categories are:"

  • Awe
  • Scary
  • Romantic
  • Funny
  • Musical
  • Epic
  • Sad
  • *any others you might wish to include*

SPOILERS AHEAD

AWE MOMENT • ŌKAMI • (2008)

The first time I used the bloom technique to restore a cursed area I was in awe. Ōkami is already a beautifully artistic game and most likely no other game will be made like it (unless it is part of the series like Ōkamiden). This game was perfect for the Wii remote to act as brush, I was in awe when the fields and trees started to come to life from blooming the blossom tree. It cleared the cursed lands and filled it with vibrant colors and life. The artistic style was beautiful along with the lifting music. It was breathtaking.

SCARY MOMENT • ALAN WAKE • (2010)

Being a psychological thriller the game definitely lives up to it's genre. This game gave me anxiety. The music was so creepy and the taken would constantly just pop up out of no where. What scared me the most was when random poltergeist objects would make a loud noise and fly at me. The game really is a piece of art, but you're constantly on edge playing it. Most of the cutscenes were edgy or included jump-scares (like the one linked). All in all, this game had me playing it with the lights on.

ROMANTIC MOMENT • ASSASSIN'S CREED: REVELATIONS • (2011)

Ezio's trilogy was no easy path for him. Over three games we watched him age and mature into the master assassin. Revelation was probably my least favorite Assassin's Creed game when it comes to mechanics because it didn't add anything new, however the story and writing was very excellent. I really enjoyed the new character of Sofia Sartor (much more than Cristina Vespucci in Assassin's Creed II). Finally giving Ezio some relief and a break from his stressful duties was a delight. However, Sofia wasn't just a eye candy, she was smart, strong willed and brave. During the course of the main story we watched as their relationship developed, it was clear each member of the party felt an attraction towards the other. My favorite scene occurred in Memory 4, where Ezio agrees to go pick white tulips for Sofia. He later meets her for a picnic and they share a short intimate moment before getting back to serious business. It was a nice change of pace. Later in the short animation Embers we see them living happy ever after with two children. So sweet. ♥

FUNNY MOMENT • BORDERLANDS 2 • (2012)

I was playing this with my friends, one who is an avid Borderlands 2 player the other not. She already said how much she loves Tiny Tina, but when my other friend and I first met Tiny Tina we couldn't help, but laugh. Everything she says is so stupid and crazy. Tiny Tina just cracks me up. By far, my favorite quote by her is "I'm a little teapot, bloody and cut. Here is my handle and here is my butt." I wouldn't want to mess with this 13 year old girl, I mean she literally said she'd "eat my babies" so I'd pass on double crossing this little angel. She's also a demolitions expert and I'd rather not be blown to pieces.

MUSICAL MOMENT • ASSASSIN'S CREED IV: BLACK FLAG • (2013)

The best sea shanty in the game. :p

EPIC MOMENT • THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: TWILIGHT PRINCESS • (2006)

Too many moments to count. However, I just have to go with a final boss battle. Being the only Zelda game I have ever played, Twilight Princess exceeded all expectations. The final boss battle stumped me the first time around, so I took a hiatus from the game and returned to beat it. The multilayered battle was great. Starting with the puppet, then fighting primal style, moving onto horseback and finally having the one vs. one battle. When the music starts for the final part of the battle and the words "Dark Lord Ganondorf" pops up it's just one of those hell yeah moments. Epic. Completing the game after going through all the dungeons and beautiful landscapes was fulfilling, but the battle and cutscenes at the end blew my mind.

SAD MOMENT • CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 3 • (2011)

Again, too many moments to choose from. I get teary eyed and sad quickly. I'm a pretty emotional person even though I don't intend to be. Now there are plenty of other deaths out there, but the saddest and most intense one (that I've played) goes to John "Soap" MacTavish. He appeared in the Modern Warfare trilogy. I never played the original Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, but I played MW2 and obviously MW3. However, the impact of his tragic death came from the reaction of Captain Price. Soap was not only a fighter, he was dashing handsome, and brave. It was really tragic, Price was basically his best comrade, they've been through hell throughout the time of the series. It was a sad change of pace moment in the game, the music didn't help either. :(

JOYFUL MOMENT • FIRE EMBLEM: AWAKENING • (2013)

I'ma just throw in this category because in order to counteract the sad moment I need a happy one. I've never played a Fire Emblem game, but I heard so many great notions about Awakening for 3DS that I had to buy it. I am 100% glad I did. This game was amazing, the story and mechanics worked so well. Typical me married MyUnit to the main handsome lead Chrom. The support conversations were so cute. Then midway through the game we had a bundle of joy in the form of a little baby named Lucina. Sadly, we left to the battlefield to continue the story. The real joyous moment happened in the emotional ending. I chose to deal the final blow resulting in my death, a death that I really did not know if I would stay dead or not. When the familiar cutscene occurred, I was filled with joy. Not only was I still alive, I was no longer the monster the people feared. Then I lived happily ever after in the epilogue. :)

Community Blog: Ubisoft

$
0
0

So hopping on the community bandwagon, mikeerik created one as well and honored me with a tag :p I take notice in developers and publishers, but not too much. I know all developers and publishers work equally hard on their games, so respect to all. I don't like calling favorites, but I'm going to call favorites because there is only one company I really enjoy, even though controversy has arisen for them. That company is Ubisoft.

Community Topic:

"Since there are so many community blogs going around, I've decided to start one too. For this blog in particular the rules are very simple! Talk about your favourite developers and/or publishers and in some cases, the publishers are developers as well so feel free to list any you want. You don't have to write up to 5 but the number 5 will become the top limit. I'm not trying to sound harsh or anything and it's only to try and test your own decision making and your choices which belong at the top 5... although honourable mentions are allowed."

Now by no mean am I saying Ubisoft is the best company in the world, they just are my favorite publisher/developer. They have a variety of different games under there belt. Different genres, different characters, many IPs. Currently in 2014, Ubisoft has been rolling out different games. While they continue their franchises such as Assassin's Creed, Trials, Far Cry, Just Dance they also introduced new ones such as Watch_Dogs, along with the 2015 announcements for The Division and The Crew.

Ubisoft has a bunch of developers, thus allowing them to have such a cast pool of games. While their headlong series is by far Assassin's Creed, their other entries hold their own. However, since they use the same engine for a lot of their games they all may feel similar to one another which is a turn off for some. For me, the similarity between games (such as the mechanics for Watch_Dogs and Assassin's Creed) I actually like. It makes the game easier to control and understand.

Besides their regular engines, Ubisoft also has  the UBIart Framework engine which brought to the community Child of Light and Valiant Hearts. Both games are graphically stunning. Not only that, but are well written. I haven't played Valiant Hearts, but Child of Light is definitely an artistic master piece. While people deem the all rhyming talk to be annoying, it is just a different artistic impression. It works well with the theme. Not only that, but game mechanics were nailed. The game had all parts 100% developed, not one section was better than the other.

Now the real masterminds behind the game are the individuals who developed it. I respect them dearly. I'll be honest I don't sit through credits to read individuals names, but the team is vastly talented. Much credit goes to the illustrators of the game for the concept and appeal of the game centers around the artwork. Ubisoft went out of the box with creating these games. They are different than the typical games on the market. Granted they are both arcade-like titles, they hold their own. Priced around $15 is not bad for two great games.

Ubisoft has studios around the world each contributing an aspect to their games. Then they also have stand alone studios like RedLynx, the developers of the Trials series. Each studio Ubisoft has makes it the fourth largest video game company, but that doesn't get to their head too much. They still develop and produced quality games. With each one being different from the other.

Now obviously game within a series such as Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six; we'll see a more gradual change rather than immediate. Ubisoft has always for a few games went outside the comfort zone instead of having a stereotypical white male lead. While controversy surrounds them for not including a female lead assassin in the upcoming co-op Assassin's Creed: Unity, I wouldn't knock at them too hard. They are the company that has featured a Native American, two African-Americans (even if not in core series) and a female lead. While still a lot of diversity can occur in the company, the lack of representation has to do with society and culture itself, although that is slowly changing.

Regardless, Ubisoft is innovative. While they have a lot of core games they have a whole other side focused for personal benefit, such as fitness and inspiration. For instance, for the younger crowd they have handheld game series Imagine, to encourage young minds to follow their dreams. For the everyone crowd, they have the sensation Just Dance series. Which is pure fun and silliness, while at the same time grants a nice workout if done in succession. I have Just Dance 2014, which works extraordinary well with the Xbox One's kinect. It is a great party game which brings friends together, unless I play solo and attempt to dominate other world players on the world dance floor. Ubisoft tries to appeal to everyone, put out a game for everyone on the market. Thus, they bring a variety to the table to choose from.

That's really it, I feel this blog was basically a free promotion for Ubisoft. Regardless, I do really like the company and a lot of the games they produce. The company isn't perfect, as no company is, but it is still good enough to take my top spot! In all honesty, if Ubisoft wasn't the publisher or developer for most of these game I'd probably like whoever did more. :p

I'm suppose to tag people, but I don't want to add pressure to anyone, so feel free to join in on the community blog rolls!

Community Theme: Summertime Film Hits

$

Looking back on my wall dossier of movie ticket stubs, I really haven't see that many films. My first ticket (obviously not my first movie ever seen in theaters) dates back only to August 2010, that was 4 years ago and I've still only actually gone to the movie's 13 times. I guess that's a good amount, movies are expensive these days. Luckily my mom buys tickets in bulk at her office for a cheaper price, so when I do want to go I already have a ticket ready. Going to the movies is a fun experience, in a way, I prefer empty theaters. However, when it's a blockbuster film hitting the screens I do like full theaters, so everyone can enjoy the same reaction and then clap at the end. Oh, and Lost_in_Translation's theme is Summer Blockbusters.

The Challenge:

"What I'd like people to write about this week, is about their favorite Summer blockbuster film! It's the first week of July. Independence Day is coming up for Americans, but for the movie public in general this is the best time of year for Summer blockbusters.  These may not be your favorite films of all time, but they are the type of film that you think is perfect to just sit around with a bag of popcorn and a soft drink, and let yourself relax for a few hours of just plain fun."

Movie Stubs

Out of those 14 movies I think only 4 were in the summertime. Summer really is only like 3 months, June, July and August. For the rest of the year it is generally cold. Regardless here are my summer blockbuster. In no way, shape or form are these my favorite films, but there are the only summertime films I can remember, because I literally have proof that I went during the summer time!

 Title: Inception

 Release Date: July 16th, 2010

 Director: Christopher Nolan

 Writer: Christopher Nolan

I remember being a few minutes late to this movies. However, I didn't miss much. Christopher Nolan is a brilliant director, the film itself lived up to it's name. Without giving away too much of the film, it definitely was mind twister, missing a single detail will get result in you being lost the rest of the film. The premise of the film was to basically divulge into layers of the mind to achieve a goal, the actors/actress play their roles equally well making the movie even more enjoyable. The ending itself leaves a curious taste in your mouth. Overall, it was a very pleasant summer film that actually makes you analyze what you just watched.

Title: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Part 2)

Release Date: July 15th, 2011

Director: David Yates

Writers: Steve Kloves (screeplay), J.K. Rowling (novel)

Oh Harry Potter face_nerd I was quite sad watching this movie. Through all the films the acting was subpar (well the later films got a bit better), the movie themselves were nicely produced. I haven't read the novels, but the movies were easy to follow. The books are probably better than the films, more details and all, but being able to see the magic is what I like. The production of computer generated action and magic was quite, good although sometimes was questionable. All and all, this movie brought an clean end to the Harry Potter saga.

Title: This Is The End

Release Date: June 12th, 2013

Directors: Seth Rogan & Evan Goldberg

The weirdest comedy of the summer! This group of buffoons movie was quite hilarious. This religious apocalypse interpretation was pretty traumatizing. I mean, what makes a person good? If you're not good you don't get sucked up into the best afterlife ever apparently, instead your stuck on Earth to fend yourself off against man eating demons (or other cannibals!) The references in this film were oozing everywhere, from "The Exorcist" to the trio's own "Pineapple Express". Some moment my friend and I were literally just like "WTF is going on?!", but it made it all the more funny. However, the best scene by far goes to the ending. Everybody, rock your body face_wink

Title: Monster's University

Release Date: June 21st, 2013

Director: Dan Scanlon

Writer(s): Daniel Geson (screenplay), Robert L. Baird (screenplay), & Dan Scanlon

Pixar never fails to deliver a film. This pre-seqeul to the infamous 2001 Monster's Inc. revealed so many facts and answered so many questions we had about the original film. Graphically the movie was as good if better than Pixar's past films. References for the original movie were obviously around, but overall the story was solid as well. It followed a "typical" college theme, with Sully being the jock and Mike being the nerd. It housed the idea of sororities and fraternities and their participation/influence on college. What surprised me most though was the ending didn't cop out like I thought it would. Lesson learned, actions have consequences! This movie is a must see for those who have seen the original, 12 years later and Pixar still is at it's peak! If you haven't seen either, now you can start with this and watch the original, neither will disappoint!

Now while none of these movies are my favorites, they definitely were fun summer time past times. Took a few hours of my day to just relax in the nice air conditioned theaters with my friends and/or family. I'm not much of a movie-goer, but I have no problem sitting at home watching films through Netflix. There are too many movies to count that I just enjoy sitting and relaxing!

Thanks for reading!
Enjoy the summer sunshine!

Intersectionality Within Video Games

$
0
0

Games along with other forms of technological entertainment such as movies and television are chock full of stereotypes. This is indirectly due to social constructs of the real world; most forms of entertainment reflect real life issues or ideals. Games, the most interactive form of entertainment, follows the same status quo as it's companions. They typically follow the social constraints of race, class and gender. While, I spare developers too much grief, as it is hard to please everyone and everyone's artistic vision is different, there is an extreme unbalance when it comes to character equality. It really matters about the depth and personality of the character, however there are the aesthetics of the character that we will constantly see along with their presentation. Many companies in order to avoid the social backlash is to allow for custom character creation. For those who don't, those who have a particular vision of what their character will look like, will most likely face some kind of turbulence for out casting others.

WHAT IS INTERSECTIONALITY?

Intersectionality refers to the complex ways in which identities intersect, interact with one another and help to form and shape one’s experiences. On a simple note, it shows how race, class and gender all affect one another, how each plays a part in the other. Why is this important? All forms of oppression connect with these three ideals. They are present in society and culture and shape how we all live today. Thus, the connections of oppression fall into the digital realm.

For instance, let's look at Grand Theft Auto V (a game I have not finished, I'm pretty sure I'm still at the start of the game); a game where it takes pride in these judgement and stereotypes. I'm not going to knock at this too hard for the game is all about satire and exaggeration of these exact stereotypes society has created. If we simply look at the three leads; Michael, Trevor and Franklin we can immediately see the differences between all of them. We have Michael the wealthy white-heterosexual male who is the brains of most of the story, then we have Trevor the stereotyped trailer-living hillbilly white-heterosexual male who has no filter, and finally Franklin the penniless black-heterosexual male who is pretty much dragged into the mix. This game blatantly flaunts the inequality society has created. However, it showcases how these three different people all exist and do what they do because of one another. Their grand plans wouldn't be able to fall through without the other being there.

GTA V also shows the "norms" that these three people live and we laugh because we know it is true. True in that matter that a lot of society perceives people like this. We all know that not all white males live in luxury, that not all crazy people live in trailers and that not all black people live in the ghetto. Stereotypes at their prime, but GTA V did that purposely. We find labels and grouping easier because it keeps life organized. Perception and association thrives in our human minds, regardless if they're true or false.

RACE

Most game titles, if the character is not custom, have the lead as a white-heterosexual male. Just look at some of the past recent releases this decade, we have Booker Dewitt from Bioshock Infinite, Joel from The Last of Us, Ezio Auditore & Edward Kenway from Assassin's Creed, Aiden from Watch_Dogs, Mario & Luigi from the Mario series, Alan Wake from Alan Wake, Link from The Legend of Zelda; the list can go on and on. Developers rarely stray from the regular white-heterosexual male formula. Why is this? Simple, because of the white-male ego of privilege; that they are the dominate race and all others are subordinate. Many of the deviant ethnicities will be associated with instant prejudices. Harsh? Yes, but just to be clear not all men are like this (women have egos too), I'd like to say majority of men are open-minded and respect everyone. However, this dominate race that believes they are the best has been instilled over decades, centuries! It isn't some idea that just popped up out of the dust.

Race is a another huge topic in the gaming industry. The problem arises when developers try to accurately depict them and or if they blatantly do not try to accurately depict them. Back in May 2014 I read this blog by SpartanWarrior_628101 about Native Americans and Video Games, which pretty much talked about their portrayal in video games. There is an accurate way to portray their native culture and an inaccurate way. There is the over stereotyped version of all races that can be seen in a variety of games whether it is intentional or just a subconscious decision. There have been video games that showcased races in a light that is not over stereotyped yet modernized (ie. Nastas from Red Dead Redemption). Instead it shows them all as equals, which we can see in games such as EA's/DICE's Battlefield 4 where you have a three different key characters with almost no racial predjudices. They all come across as equals and will play a heavy roll in the end. For a war game, to be featuring a female pivotal character, not only that a fully Chinese female character [Huang 'Hannah' Shuyi], was quite a surprise and a nice change. They made her will power and intelligence just as strong as the other male characters, despite typical war, gender and racial bias. Then again, most war games encourage the idea of teamwork and trust and it doesn't matter what you look like or where you come from. They're all in it together. As it should be, doesn't matter shape or size, they're getting the job done and each putting in equal effort. Race depicted in this game that everyone was equal on the team.

Semper Fi

Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed series is another franchise that handles ethnic diversity quite well. We've seen a variety of races portrayed over the franchise. We've got Middle-Eastern [Altair], European [Ezio, Edward] Native American [Connor], African-American [Aveline, Adewale] and then sub-assassin's of Chinese [Shao Jun] and Russian [Nikolai]. A nice diverse set, while at the same time showcasing the assassin's roots without under or over portraying their ethnicity. At least with Assassin's Creed the protagonists predominately have their adventure in their hometowns or around their upbringing to show how and where they adapted to their cultural ideas. Seeing Connor's Native American childhood was a treat, while his character was a bit boring, Ubisoft didn't fail to create a solid character and representation. More companies should show such diversity in their franchise. However, many fear to do so in thinking they will either offend other races or get backlash for featuring a non white male. Developers can't please everyone, so there really is no harm in going outside their comfort zones.

Nothing is true, everything is permitted

For example, Pokémon finally has allowed for customizable characters after what, 14 years? While they attended to the gender dilemma back in Crystal days, the protagonists from then on have all been white. Character customization blurs all lines of racial discrimination because it falls into the hands of the player. All players will experience they same type of action and personalty, they can be whatever race, class or gender, they want to be thus making the game equal in all corners. It prevents showing that one player is better than the other because they are all experience the same thing, just embodied differently. Obviously no one human is alike (except for identical twins etc.) and everyone has different wants for what their character will look like. Character customization generally grants that freedom while also bringing equality to all.

CLASS

Class (out of the three) is probably the most under rated construct represented in video games. When I mean class I mean societal classes like privileged and underprivileged, not like rogue or mage (although in many games those represent many real life classes). Since we as the protagonist go through all types of challenges and strife, class inequality sometime goes unnoticed. However, in open world like games, class is relatively noticeable especially between rich and poor. When we look at games like Grand Theft Auto and Saints Row, both resemble cities of the world and the inequalities they contain. They each have wealthy areas and then the more deprived areas of the city. While the poor cities are ethically diverse, they are filled with gangs and minority groups. At least since they take place in the USA, these minority groups include Latin Americans, African-Americans, Asians, etc (hence how race ties into class). Representation of these minority groups is racial bias.

Even in fantasy games like The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, one is easily able to distinguish the wealthy from the poor due to outfits and living quarters. Not only that, but look at the race of the Khajiit, probably the most deprived race; they have to resort to smuggling and thievery to survive. How did this come to be? Oppression per usual, before slavery was outlawed the Khajiit were enslaved by rich families and industries. When looking at both of the beast classes Khajiit and Argonians, their natural skill sets revert to forms of stealth and manipulation, for they are perceived as incompetent and invaluable to the world, and instead have to live by stealing from the wealthy. Kind of like how many people view those in poverty, that they are more of a nuisance than a benefit to society. This may be looking too far into the idea, but as I said games usually reflect societal ideals in some way, shape, or form. Skyrim society feels as if these people do not belong in their society, so they discriminate against them. Sounds like most real world cultures right?

Now, class indifferences will always take part in gaming because it will always be in society. No matter how long we fight for equality, it will 99.9% never be achieved. We can only shorten the poverty gap, but then again that really relies on the actions of the government. While in video games we as players get to be the protagonist and change the world, our one voice needs hundreds in order to be heard. Classes should be more ethically balanced in video games, thus developers have to start including all types of races and not just single out one minority group. Not just make the whites wealthy and all others in poverty. This may be too much wishful thinking since almost all developers follow cultural norms which shift slowly.

GENDER

This by far is the hottest topic of the three and has been for quite some time. Two most recent incidents about video game gender issues was Ubisoft's exclusion of a lead female assassin in the upcoming co-op game Assassin's Creed: Unity and the IeSF exclusion of female tournament competitors. These are just two gender bias incidents there are plenty others. Let's not forget that being female or male is biological, being woman or man is choice, hence the Hearthstone exclusion of all female competitors was straight up sexist. Even though they bended the rules to include them, they then discriminated against males by still holding two female-only tourneys. (IeSF get it together!)

Besides that, the main issue is that genders are unequally represented in video games. Now I'm not talking about customizable characters because that generally leads to equal play (at least in terms of man/woman gender). Mass Effect 3 is a prime example of a video game embodying the ever scarce homosexuality. A gender that is rarely seen in defined lead characters. People gave Mass Effect 3 much hate for even having this option, why, simply because most men perceive "being gay as being weak".  This idea sits mostly with the uneducated or close minded folks. Everyone knows that it doesn't matter what biological sex or gender one is, they are still a human being. Something that Mass Effect 3 embraced and other games should as well, everyone is human (except the aliens...) and has a soul. That is why the option to have whatever type of relationship is there. The freedom of choice is powerful, the game isn't forcing you to be anything you don't want to be. Those who trashed the concept are most likely afraid of threatening their masculinity. The huge fear many males have is that they lose masculinity and fear being perceived as weak, hence most games are lead by strong heterosexual males.

Love is Love

On that note, as stated before, developers cannot please everyone. As I went over in the 'Race' section, there is an over predominate amount of straight lead males. While slowly here and there we get a treat of a different race or gender, the white-hetero-male while most likely be dominating a bit longer. However, don't lose hope, there has recently been a rise of positive women in gaming, like Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite, Aveline from Assassin's Creed: Liberation, the reinvented Lara Croft from Tomb Raider, Hannah from Battlefield 4, Agnes and Edea from Bravely Default, Faith from Mirror's Edge, Zoey from Left4Dead, Rochelle from Left4Dead2, etc.

Women Know How to Fight

Some games (like these ones listed) portray gender in an equal and balanced way, but others will always marginalize deviant genders. Mainly women, (the odds of a homosexual, transgender, other genders are so slim of being represented it isn't even funny), are subjected in games. They are either used as a sexual object of distraction or affection. They tend to be perceived a useless, expendable, or even the object of hatred. Not only that they are typical bodacious and dressed in skimpy outfits to appeal to the male audience. All these disrespectful images fill peoples minds that women in video games are nothing more than objects. They become perceived as not being equal. This isn't just in video games, but in other entertainment and advertisement alike. The constant branding of women is then drilled into people's minds giving this image of the subordinate woman. Companies need to be aware of their decisions, most have been good about this theme lately, but some, like the developers of Bound by Flame, need to catch on to the new wave.

Let's not forgot the video game communities. They play a large role in the discouragement of women in gaming, while yes not all men are abusers online, many are. Being in online lobbies in games such as Call of Duty which full of trolls and just plain rude people drains the fun away. It's almost like they've never heard of girls play video game hence the "oh are you a girl, get to the kitchen" it's like come on, have some respect, what decade are you living in? I don't know if this makes people think they're tough or not, it really just shows how much a jerk they are. People like that are those who discourage females from participating online, games are supposed to be about fun, it's no fun being constantly ridiculed over a hobby that anyone can play. Of course, the internet has no rules and cannot be moderated, so all we can do is report and pray to find people that aren't so arrogant.

Yes, girl gamers look just like any other guy gamer (minus biological differences!) We sit and stare at our screens and play the game. Whatever weird fantasies and fallacies you men dream is is quite strange. Not all men are like this, in fact, most men know that girls can be just as good as them if better. In fact, isn't it better to find people who share stuff in common with? Thus, gaming companies should stop the over sexualized female image. We don't see over sexualized men now do we, instead we see buff, fearless, masculine men! The exploitation of men and women in media is completely different from one another, one boasting the gender the other diminishing it. Many game developers have already adapted to this idea and have lessened their inclusion of the sexual female. Even hit multiplayer games like Call of Duty: Ghosts and Titanfall have added the option of being male or female to suit more players desires. It really isn't that hard to put regular female characters in to coexist with the males.

WHY THIS ALL MATTERS

Conclusion at last! All three of these categories connect to one another to cause discrimination amongst a group of people. Intersectionality (or intersectionalism) is the study of intersections between forms or systems of oppression, domination or discrimination. We cannot look at one factor without acknowledging the other. All these forms; race, class and gender coincide with one another to form an ultimate discrimination. Many companies will not create a character due to a limiting factor of the other, for instance the lack of female characters is due to not wanting to taint the white-heterosexual-male hero image. Thus, the female character will never be able to move up in class and regardless of race she will be subordinate. Not all developers follow this idea anymore as we've seen with Bioshock Infinite and The Last of Us, each have two strong female co-pilots.

The fact is that more games need to be made like this. Ones that have a balance between genders and equal respect. We do not need a plethora of female lead games, just give us more where women are represented better. Give us more games where races are portrayed more accurately. More games where class isn't stereotyped to the deviant groups of society. It's not too much to ask for really. Sure it sounds like I'm preaching equality, but is it that bad, entertainment is suppose to be for everyone, yet so many people are excluded or clearly insulted. We're in the year 2014, at least in the USA equal rights for women and LGBT members are surfacing, now they just need to be reflected in the gaming world.

Thanks for reading that long blog, I haven't written a non-communty blog in a while. I probably should have made 3 separate ones, but all three coincide together, so I voted against that. I'm not like a super feminist or anything, I just believe in equal representation for all. Call me an optimist, but life is too short to fill it with hate and prejudice. Gaming is an outlet for many people, so let us play with who we want. Give us characters that are interesting, but stray from the typical formula. If you developers give us an impactful character it doesn't matter what they look like or where they come from, because it shows that everyone is equal.

So tell me;

What is your take on the matter?

Do you want developers to create more inclusive and respectful games?

Or do you think there is nothing wrong with the industry?

I personally don't think there is anything seriously wrong with the industry, they are just going with the flow trying to capitalize on money (what business doesn't want money?!). The gaming industry themselves is male-dominated and they bank of of societal norms. The only way to change what we see in games is to change the cultural norms of society today. Many have rallied their voices for equal representation and that works because the era we are living is in fact more inclusive. Not equal in the slightest, but the industry seems to be heading in the right direction.

UPDATE: Let me clarify my standpoint. This blog was to point out how these three social constructs are portrayed in gaming and how they relate. While I do think developers should be more inclusive, I do not think they should conform just because people are telling them to. More or less they should feel inclined to be inclusive when they are on the drawing boards. We are in an era where multiculturalism is at a good place, society and culture should recognize it more.

What Makes A Classic?

$
0
0

People will always say "oh, that game is a classic" or "That movie is a classic, how have you've not seen it?" However, there is really no absolute definition of what a classic is. The dictionary definition of classic is "something judged over a period of time to be of the highest quality and outstanding of its kind". There are the forms of entertainment that are considered "cult classics" because they left a culture impact on society. Of course, everyone has their own idea of what is classic and then there is the more critically acclaimed opinion. For it to be widely accepted I'm guessing that means there has to be an overall census of which movies/games/TV/books etc. officially become labeled as classics. Then there are those who simply say the movie is a classic because it is old and lastly the people who justify a classics because it is what it is.

Out of curiosity I turned to Google to search "Top 100 Classic Movies" on Rotten Tomatoes. Out of the top 10, I've only heard of 3 and have only seen 1. So why are these movies classics, what makes them so classic? Then again majority of the movies were before my time, the most recent one being 2004's "Hero". I've never even heard of that movie, but what bothers me is that have no movies from the time frame been good enough to even be considered a classic?

For instance, why is 1933's 'King Kong' considered a classic? Was it merely just because of the graphics, since it was something spectacular to see? If that's the case then I feel sorry for all the films releasing these days, because graphics have such high standards now it's not even funny. Some CGI looks so realistic these days like James Cameron's "Avatar", but I doubt that will be go down in history. There are so many aspects that critics look for in films, but then again it boils down to the individual. One person can see something else someone else cannot. If enough people see the masterpiece within the movie, it gains status, just like anything. How many people have to see this, there is no exact number, it more or less it is what it is. People will read between the lies to defend why films are consider classics.

Same with video games. For instance, let's look at what a lot of game critics think of the best game ever created: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I have never played this game, but again, it is famous for doing something ahead of it's time. Something that no one has ever seen before. Now we have seen it, the majestic level designs, the music, the graphics...it's all been there done that from that day on (seriously just look at the entire Zelda franchise). People constantly tell me to try this game, that's I'll love it, and no doubt I probably would. However, I do not feel obligated to play it because there are so many games now that are good, the only thing is expectations have changed.

If I dwell on the past about what classics I missed out, I won't be able to see what's right in front of me. At the time these "classics" were released they were different and open society's eyes to the possibility of a new culture. However, we are not living in those days now, so why continue to hold on so dearly to these such "classics"? It is because we fear that nothing will ever be as good as them or is it because they hold sentimental value, that we give thanks to these entertainments for opening new doors? Regardless the answer, the genre of classic will stick around for years with or without new additions.

Unfortunately, in today's world, I feel less and less classics will be making history. A great story is always commendable, but how many different stories can there be without taking bits and pieces of writings that have already been out. Coming up with a unique idea and then executing it is not as easy as it seems. Great graphics, let's get real, graphics are so sharp today that people are constantly in a word war about which pixels are better. Music, everyone loves a good soundtrack, but what makes one stand out, everyone has different musical tastes.

My point is not to bash classics or say that classics are not classic. Maybe my young naive mind just doesn't see the amazingness that others see. I'm just really curious about what makes a classic, a classic!?

So tell me, I'd love to hear you're opinions about "classics"!

What are your favorite "classics"?

What will movies or games today have to do to reach the standard of the intangible classic status?

What do you think makes a classic?

Thanks for reading!
Stay classy!

Community Theme: Video Games OSTs

$

Music, who doesn't love music?! It can set the mood of someone's entire day. Video game music though is usually something different, like films and television it will add to the setting of the moment. It will add emotion to us as the player, it will give us an idea about how we should be feeling. There are so many great original scores that games have. This week's community theme hosted by Lost_in_Translation is about Game Soundtracks!

 The Challenge:

"What I'd like people to write about this week, is about their favorite video game soundtracks! Part of what makes many games so memorable are their well crafted and catchy soundtracks. They can fuel a game's atmosphere, and provide a deeper general experience that lets the player immerse themselves more fully into a chosen title.  Plus, even standalone they're just get tracks. What are some of your favorite video game soundtracks, and what do you love about them?"

It's honestly to hard to pick a favorite video games soundtrack. Video game music is so magical because it literally throws feelings at your face. You can go from instant rage to tears in a moment. Music has such an emotional impact that it can make or break a game. Most of the time when I listen to video game soundtracks, I'm just like:

Yup, totally overwhelmed by the emotional feelings the music fills me with. Sometimes it can feel like triumphing music, where I literally think I can just go Rambo and slice & dice my way to victory. Sometimes during those emotional cut scenes, the mellow depressing music will make me feel oh so sorry for that character. Then there is just the generic soundtrack background music, like those in Pokemon that are just happy songs that keep you in a nice mood to enjoy your game.

POKÉMON

I really wish the "Pokémon Symphonic Evolutions Tour" would come to New York City!

The Pokémon soundtracks fit well with the game. Peaceful when needed and intense when necessary. Each town has it' own theme that fits the setting. The music completes Pokémon. Enough Pokémon, I'm sure by now you all know I love Pokémon face_tongue

THE ELDER SCROLLS

Both theme songs fit great with the games and were also straight up epic. The songs are empowering yet calm, they were masterfully composed with great rhythm and tempo. Even at it's peaceful stages the songs remain intense with meaning.

FIRE EMBLEM: AWAKENING

This entire OST was amazing! Every song on here was just gorgeously created, I don't even have words besides saying the OST is epic.

ŌKAMI

The traditional Japanese music is just too sweet to pass by.

Really the list can go on and on, these are just four games. I really enjoy instrumentals and classical scores (with Pokémon being the exception.) All of these are music to my ears, literally!

Continuing with the sound of music, Arcterran also issued a community blog challenge:

The Challenge:

"Now here's what I'd like for you to do. I'd like for you to write a blog about a musician and what game (or games) his/her/their music would make a perfect (or near perfect!) fit and why! The one rule, The musician must not be primarily known for game soundtracks!"

Arcterran called dibs of Lindsey Stirling who would have been my #1 choice. Her violin compositions would just fit ideally with so many games. Not only that but she actually covers a lot of video game scores gorgeously. If you've never heard any of her songs, I'd suggest you check out her YouTube channel. Enough of Lindsey now.

I'd have to pick musician Yoko Kanno. While she is mainly known for composing songs used in anime soundtracks, she has also done TV shows, movies and video games. She has composed various genres of music, but she would best fit into those scenes in video games that just want to rip your heart out. Pretty much put one of her compositions in where someone in the game important just dies or bids you farewell. Her songs would fill well to JRPGs, can't really pin point any specifics, but I'm sure she could work something out.

Here's probably one of her most popular compositions from the anime Wolf's Rain:

Not a lot of words, instead just listen to the sound of music!
